Research
The research activities at the chair "Social and Health Sciences in Sport" are based on two pillars: "Physical Activity and Health" and "Educational Aspects in Physical Education and Physical Education Teacher Education".
Physical Activity and Health
"Health promotion is the process of enabling people to increase control over, and to improve their health." (Ottawa Charter of the WHO, 1986).
In line with the WHO Ottawa Charter our research activities in the field of physical activity and health are based on a salutogenetic understanding of health, settingoriented health promotion and transdisciplinarity. One focus of research is intervention studies with mostly participatory approaches (e.g. cooperative planning), which are carried out in mixed-methods designs, i.e. linking qualitative (e.g. expert interviews, focus groups, photo voice, video observations) and quantitative data (e.g. questionnaires, motor tests). At the individual level, the outcomes of the studies are considered to be aspects of health and physical literacy, empowerment, capabilities as well as physical and psychological effects with regard to physical activity and health. At the systemic level of institutions and settings, capacity building is at the forefront.
Educational aspects in Physical Education (PE) and Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE)
"You can't educate someone, you can only help him educate himself!" (mod. after Galileio Galilei, 1564-1642)
Following the competence discussion in the general educational sciences, competence development, as self-education, is a focus of research activities. The research projects focus on overriding educational goals in PE, such as health or inclusive education, but as well general didactical issues of teaching PE. For a sustainable implementation of the topics in PE and PETE, participative developed methodological-didactic measures and their effectiveness are evaluated in mixed-methods designs and further disseminated in the sense of a scaling-up process via the development of best-practice teaching modules.
Further research activities deal with social scientific and pedagogical aspects of PE and sport in schools and clubs (e.g. martial arts).
